Three years into their loving marriage, with two infant daughters at home in Los Angeles, Nicholas Arden and Ellen Wagstaff Arden are on a plane that goes down in the South Pacific. Although most passengers manage to survive, Ellen presumably perishes when she is swept off her lifeboat; her body is not recovered. Fast-forward five years and Nick, wanting to move on with his life, has Ellen declared legally dead and remarries, this time to young Bianca Steele. For their honeymoon he plans to take her to the same Monterey resort where he and Ellen honeymooned. On that very day, the Navy drops Ellen off in Los Angeles after rescuing her from the South Pacific Island where she had been stranded for the past five years. She asked the Navy not to publicize her return or even notify Nick, wanting to do so herself. Upon Ellen's arrival back home, Nick's shocked mother Grace Arden informs her that Nicky just got remarried that morning and that Ellen, as his true wife, should go to Monterey to tell Nicky she's alive. She does, and although Nicky is as shocked as his mother to see Ellen, what can he do? He still loves Ellen and wants more than everything to be with her, but what about Bianca? He doesn't know how in the world to tell his starry-eyed bride, who is in a honeymoon-amorous mood. Nick's inability to tell Bianca irks Ellen, who believes it is a manifestation of his love for Bianca over her. But Nick has his own questions about Ellen's fidelity and love for him when he learns that she was not totally alone on that island, and his questions increases when she purposefully withholds further information from him.
